Lionel Jeffries (1926-2010)

  1. Mervyn Johns,  The Sundowners,  1960.      "I was replaced by a man old enough to be my father."
  2. Richard Haydn, Mutiny on the Bounty, 1962.      Quit.  Easily. Jeffries hated  Hollywood  at first -  "Shepherd's Bush in cellophane." He went back and got to know it better during The Notorious Landlady, 1962.
  3. George Sanders, The Golden Head, 1964     . All change..! Directors  (James Hill to Richard Thorpe. Then, Lorraine Power replaced Hayley Mills and Sanders succeeded  Jeffries,
  4. Warren Mitchell, Till Death Us Do Part, TV, 1965-1975.       Popular character star Jeffries was the BBC’s second choice (after Leo McKern) for the ridiculous right-wing docker, Al Garnett. The sitcom purported to be be anti-racist, except Alf’s ranting became so popular he was for (too) many, a voice of reason! McKern and Jeffries obviously saw that coming. Mitchell, another busy character actor, became a star and Alf became Archie Bunker in the US version, All in the Family - water compared to Alf’s acid.
  5. Patrick Stewart, Lifeforce, 1984.
  6. Aubrey Morris, Lifeforce, 1984.
  7. Frank Finlay, Lifeforce, 1984.
