Millie Perkins

  1. Elana Eden, The Story of Ruth, 1959. Director Henry Koster and producer Samuel  G Engel saw (allegedly) about 300 actressess for the Biblical Ruth,  testing just 29… including Perkins, Diane Baker, Myrna Fahey, Ulla Jacobsson (Ingmar Bergman’s Swedish  discovery), Susan Kohner, and Tina Louise. Koster actually wanted Susan Strasberg. But Engel bowed to studio pressure about the Israeli Eden (ex-Cooper), one of George Stevens’ final five possibles for The Diary of Anne Frank, 1958,  won by… Perkins.
  2. Audrey Hepburn, The Unforgiven, 1959.      Millie never understood why she and not Audrey made The Diary of Anne Frank. But knew all about the reversed process… Fox first rewarded her for Diary with Wild in the Country with Elvis in 1960. And not hen lost interest. “I was skinny, I didn’t have any breasts. I was not their type. Marilyn Monroe, Jayne Mansfield and Sheree North were the big names at the studio. I was a pain in the neck to them - they wouldn’t loan me out to anyone.” So she wed scenarist Robert Thom, had two children, and the very best of times making two Westerns, The Shooting and Ride the Whirlwind, in two weeks in Utah. With friends like Jack Nicholson, “who still send me flowers every year on my birthday.”
  3. Elizabeth Taylor, Cleopatra, 1963.
