Louis Garrel

  1. Fu’ad Ait Aattou, , Une vieille maîtresse (US: The Last Mistress), France-Italy, 2007. When Garrel - a cert for every libertine role in France - proved unavailable, auteur Catherine Breillat simply went out... and discovered her new Ryno de Marigny in a Paris café. He has not yet made a second film.
  2. Robinson Stévenin, L’Armée du crime/The Army of Crime, France, 2009.     Stévenin had already been booked by realisateur Robert Guédiguian to play French Resistance fighter Henri Krasucki (future boss of the French Communist Party, 1982-92), when Garrel fell out and Robinson took over his role as Marcel Rayman, another member of the poet Missak Manouchian’s reseau.
  3. Melvil Poupaud, Laurence Anyways, Canada-France, 2011.     “There was a change in the casting of the main role,” said a tres discreet Poupaud. Garrel had a walk-on role in actor-auteur Xavier Dolan’s previous film, Les Amours imaginaires, 2009.
  4. Mathieu Amalric, La Vénus à la fourrure (UK/US: Venus In Fur), France-Poland, 2012.     Garrel was delayed on his ex-lover Valeria Bruni Tedeschi’s Un chateau en Italie and Roman Polanski had to look elsewhere for his Thomas (and found someone looking rather  like himself) . Both films competed at the 66th Cannes festival in 2013.
  5. Pierre Deladonchamps,Plaire aimer et courir vite (Sorry Angel),France, 2017. Change of Jacques in auteurChristophe Honoré’s 14th film - o match for similar gay-roms, 120 Beats Per Minuteand Call Me By Your Name. And what did The Guardian critic Peter Bradshaw about the  main role? “Arthur is a kind of smug and self-satisfied role in which Honoré might until recently have cast the puckishly narcissistic Louis Garrel.” Hah!
