Bernard Archard

  1. Ray Barrett, Doctor Who #011: The Rescue, TV, 1964.      The busy character player was unavailable when the call came and the Aussie took over as space crash survivor Bennett… who was really Koquillion,  a bipedit from planet Dido.  Next time around, Archard proved available for  #082: Pyramids of Mars: Part Four, 1975
  2. Leonard Sachs, Doctor Who #123: Act of Infinity: Part One, TV, 1983.   Sachs helped kick off the 20th season - as Borusa, President of the Council Time Lords.  His first TV drama since 1975. And it showed. He had a memory lapses over his lines - two only in this episode. Doc5, Peter Davison (and various suits) suggested substituting him with Archard. Producer John Nathan-Turner refused.
  3. Patrick Stewart, Lifeforce, 1984.   Or, lifeforces… considering director Tobe Hooper had an army of 44 UK actors for just one role!  Included on theDr Armstrong list were three Doctor Whos and (Dr) Graham Chapman of the Monty Python gang!  Archard was among 27 listed for two or more roles (five for Archard!).  And all the time,  Hooper knew it didn’t matter a damn who played what guy as all eyes would be on Mathilda May - resplendently naked for almost the entire 116 minutes.  (A rare accomplishment,  swiftly copied the following year by another Parisienne,  Patricia Barzyk - Miss France 1980 -  in Jean-Pierre Mocky’s La machine à découdre).
  4. Michael Gothard, Lifeforce, 1984. Probably unknown to them, 34 actors were suggested for Dr Bukovsky. Archard, John Abineri, Patrick Allen, Anthony Bate, Ralph Bates, Hywel Bennett, John Bennett, Brian Blessed, Michael Byrne, Anton Diffring, Denholm Elliott, Paul Freeman, Julian Glover, Rutger Hauer, Bernard Hepton, Derek Jacobi, Martin Jarvis, Freddie Jones, Wolf Kahler, Jeremy Kemp, Michael Kitchen, James Laurenson, John McEnery, Lee Montague, George Sewell, Michael Sheard, Vladek Sheybal, Clifford Rose, Leonard Rossiter,  Robert Stephens, Oliver Tobias, David Warner, Simon Ward, Timothy West.
  5. Frank Finlay, Lifeforce, 1984.  The next  search was for German actors  (hello, Anton Diffring!) or those who could play German. Result: 22 possibilities… Archard, John Abineri, John Bennett, Dirk Bogarde, Nigel Davenport, Denholm Elliott, Michael Gough, Bernard Hepton, Trevor Howard, Freddie Jones, Klaus Kinski, Hardy Kruger, Herbert Lom, James Mason (ah, Rommel!),  Donald Pleasence, Clifford Rose Leonard Rossitier, Maximilian Schell, Vladek Sheybal, Robert Stephens and even Max von Sydow (hey, an accent is an accent).  All up for Dr Hans Fallada, an expert of - get this! - life after death…
  6. Aubrey Morris, Lifeforce, 1984.  Also listed for Sir Percy Heseltine… among 26 others.  John Abineri, George Baker, Anthony Bate, Allan Cuthbertson, Derek Fowlds, Denholm Elliott, Ronald Fraser, Michael Gough, Robert Hardy, Bernard Hepton, Trevor Howard, Harold Innocent, Peter Jeffrey, Freddie Jones, Ronald Lacey,  TP McKenna, Clifford Rose, Leonard Rossiter, John Savident, Robert Stephens, Richard Todd, Patrick Troughton, Timothy West, Richard Wilson, Frank Windsor.
  7. Jerome Willis, Lifeforce, 1984.   Yet when it came to The Pathologist and his grisly task of bodies with the life force sucked out of them (by Mathilda May), there were but four ideas: Archard, John Abineri, John Carson and the winning Willis.   And after all that… “Lifeforce is a movie about Halley’s comet,” said Paul Attanasio, The Washington Post, “and if we're lucky, we won’t see another like it for 75 years.”
