George Sewell (1924-2007)

  1. Bill Fraser, Doctor Who #110: Meglos, TV, 1980.       Co-writer John Flanagan created General Grugger for Lee Marvin (!) - and was staggered when new producer John Nathan-Taylor chose Fraser, a sitcom clown. Akin to subbing Marvin with Phil Silvers. Some thought was also given to four Z Cars cops - Brian Blessed, James Ellis, Stratford Johns, Frank Windsor - and the Houston brothers, Donald and Glyn. Plus Sewell, Harry Andrews, Bernard Archard, Peter Cushing, Ronald Fraser, Peter Gilmore, TP McKenna, Donald Pleasence, Leonard Sachs, Nigel Stock, John Stratton, Richard Todd and Peter Vaughan … very familiar names on Nathan-Taylor’s casting (dart) board throughout his eclectic and scandalous 80s reign.
  2. Patrick Stewart, Lifeforce, 1984.
  3. Michael Gothard, Lifeforce, 1984.
  4. John Hallam, Lifeforce, 1984.
  5. Patrick Connor, Lifeforce, 1984.
  6. Maurice Colbourne, Doctor Who #133: Resurrection Of The Daleks, TV, 1984.       Aunty  wanted a name for Commander Lytton… like Sewell, Meg Bennett, Brian Blessed, Kenneth Cope, Timothy Dalton (the future Lord President in #202: The End of Time, 2000), Leslie Grantham (not yet Dirty Den in EastEnders), Alfred Lynch, Clive Merrison (BBC Radio’s Sherlock Holmes), Terry Molloy (aka Davros), John Rhys-Davies, Maurice Roëves. Plus several of the 184 candidates for just 16 roles in Lifeforce that year: Sewell who went on to #148: Remembrance of the Daleks, 1988), Nicholas Ball, Steven Berkoff, Tom Chadbon, Paul Darrow, Michael Gothard, Don Henderson, Del Henney (he became Colonel Archer), Martin Jarvis, Michael Jayston, Edward Peel, Patrick Stewart, Anthony Valentine, David Warner. All 25 up for one role in a Doctor Who… Preposterous!
  7. Forbes Collins, Doctor Who # 138: Vengeance on Varos, TV, 1984.        Sewell was als o among the 20 names rung up the flagpole for the treacherous Chief Officer… Sewell, Collins, Tony Caunter, Tom Chadbon, Peter Childs, Michael Culver, James Ellis, Tom Georgeson, John Hallam, Terrence Hardiman, Don Henderson, John Hollis, Ronald Lacey, Edward Peel, Clifford Rose, John Savident, Patrick Stewart, Donald Sumpter, Malcolm Tierney - and Stephen Yardley, who played Arak. For his single trip to the Whovere, Sewell was Ratcliffe in # 148: Remembrance of the Daleks, 1988, with Doc7 Sylvester McCoy during the 1963 Dalek war.
  8. John Stratton, Doctor Who #140: The Two Doctors, TV, 1985.       The two Time Lords were Doc2 Patrick Troughton and Doc 6, the short lived Colin Baker. Shockeyes were more plentiful. The 22 prospects were: Sewell, Stratton, Joss Ackland, George Baker, Ian Bannen, Brian Blessed, Denholm Elliott, James Ellis, Frank Finlay, Ronald Fraser, Michael Gothard, Don Henderson, Donald Houston, Freddie Jones, Jeremy Kemp, Roy Kinnear, Ronald Lacey, TP McKenna, Aubrey Morris, Donald Pleasence, Peter Sallis, Peter Vaughan.
