Tara Ward, Doctor Who #130: Warriors of The Deep, 1984.       For Doc5 Peter Davison’s finale, 18 stunners were shuffled for Preston… Schell (Countess Scarlioni in #105: City of Death, 1979), Ward, Lynda Bellingham, Sarah Berger, Isla Blair, Suzanne Danielle, Patricia Finnegan, Jenny Hanley, Diane Keen, Rula Lenska (Dr Styles in #133: Resurrection of the Daleks, TV, 1984), Susan Penhaligon (Lakis in #64: The Time Monster, 1972), Bond Girl Pamela Salem, Susan Skipper, Primi Townsend (Mula in #99: The Pirate Planet, 1978), Wanda Ventham (the mother of Benedict Cumberbatch), Fiona Walker… and two Ken Russell favourites: Georgina Hale and Helen Mirren.
  2. Kate Mulgrew, Star Trek: Voyager, TV, 1995-2001.       With her strong UK TV science fiction background - Moon Zero Two, Space:1999 and, of course, Doctor Who - the Hungarian Schell was favourite for the first female Starfleet skipper.   Then came Geneviève Bujold, who quit after two days, decidedly unhappy with TV filming methods. Finally, was Mulgrew (Mrs Columbo) who made historyas Captain Kathryn Janeway. Through her German great-grandfather, Katherina Freiin Schell von Bauschlott is a great-niece of the French King Louis XIV, among other crowned heads of Europe.
