Andrea Leeds (1914-1984)

  1. Frances Farmer, Come And Get It, 1936.    Producer Samuel Goldwyn announced Miriam Hopkins, who plainly never suited director Howard Hawks.   He ran a few tests and settled on fresh UCLA graduate Antoinette Lees, changed her name, then his mind, giving her a smaller role after falling for the even fresher Frances. “One of the cleanest, simplest, hardest-working persons I ever knew... always looked as though she was shining. She had no phoniness… just fabulous. More talent than anyone I ever worked with.” Leeds made a further nine more movie suntil changing her name again - by marrying  millionaire Robert Stewart Howard in 1940.
  2. Olivia De Havilland, Gone With The Wind, 1938.
  3. Mary Howard, Abe Lincoln In Illinois, 1939.    Sam Goldwyn  refused to loan Leeds to RKO for the role of  Ann Rutledge., the beauty in Abe’s life before running into his future wife,  Mary Todd.
  4. June Duprez, And Then There Were None, 1944.  Change of the sly secretary, Valerie Claythorne. And of the title when Agatha Christie refused use of the name of her book and play, Ten Little Indians. No way to treat French realisateur Rene Clair’s final Hollywood gig.
