Kyra Sedgwick

  1. Jennifer Beals, Flashdance, 1982.   Sedgwick’s agent told her to wear leotard, heels and no tights. She turne in miniskirt, heels… and temper when UK director Adrian Lyne took a pone call during her audition! The “nation-wide search“ (of LA…!!) came down to  20 possibilities for flashprancer Alex Owens. Kyra, Jamie Lee Curtis, Bo Derek, Janice Dickinson, Bridget Fonda, Jennifer Grey (yet she won Dirty Dancing), Melanie Griffith, Daryl Hannah, Mariel Hemingway, Helen Hunt (hated the script), Jennifer Jason Leigh, Heather Locklear, Andie MacDowell, Kathy Najimy, Tatum O’Neal, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sharon Stone  and Debra Winger. Pix of the final three - Beals, Demi Moore and Leslie Wing - were shown to the studio’s  construction guys by Paramount suits asking: “Which of these women do you most wanna fuck?”   Dissolve.
  2. Robin Wright (Penn), The Princess Bride, 1986.     Director Rob Reiner thumbed through a veritable little black book of Hollywood’s newyoung hotties! Suzy Amis, Valerie Bertinelli, Yasmine Bleeth, Phoebe Cates, Courteney Cox, Kim Delaney, Rebecca de Mornay, Cathryn de Prume, Sherilyn Fenn, Jennifer Grey, Anne Heche, Marg Helgenberger, Lauren Holly, Patsy Kensit, Juliette Lewis, Carey Lowell, Kelly Lynch, Virginia Madsen, Mary Stuart Masterson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Alexandra Paul, Amanda Pays, Meg Ryan, Mia Sara, Greta Scacchi, Annabella Sciorra, Tori Spelling, Catherine Mary Stewart, Brenda Strong, Courtney Thorne-Smith, Uma Thurman, Meg Tilly, Charlene Tilton, Nancy Travis, Amy Yasbeck, Sean Young.
  3. Julie Warner, Mr Saturday Night, 1992.     Pregnant. So it was the Doc Hollywood find who had to age from 20 to sixtysomething in Billy Crystal's ill-received directing bow.
  4. Patricia Arquette, True Romance,1992.  “I’m not a whore. I’m a call-girl. There’s a difference, you know!” Quentin Tarantino created Alabama for Joan Cusack. UK director Tony Scott preferred Drew Barrymore, fully booked at the time.  So SAEdgwick, Bridget Fonda, Diane Lane, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Juliette Lewis Julia Roberts, Brooke Shields and (inevitably) Uma Thurman were tipped for the girl…  with the name, said QT, sounding like a Pam Grier role! Except she was named Jackie Brownwhen he directed her in 1997.In Tarantino’s first ending, Clarence was killed and Alabama would turn to crime with Mr. White - he’s asked about her during Reservoir Dogs, 1991.
  5. Jennifer Aniston, The Object of My Affection, 1997.  Brooklyn social-worker Nina Borowski is pregnant, falling for a gay guy and wanting to raise her child with him.  Nothing is that simple...  Casting went through two other couples: Sarah Jessica Parker-Robert Downey Jr and Uma Thurman-Keanu-Reeves (someone loved Stephen Frears’ Dangerous Liaisons), before settling upon Jennifer Aniston-Pau; Rudd.  Winona Ryder, Kyra Sedgwick and Debra Winger were also in the Nina mix. But just not as as famous as Friends
  6. Kirsten Dunst, Spider-Man, 2001.
  7. Diane Lane, Unfaithful, 2001.    For his passionate US update of Madame Bovary,UK director Adrian Lyne saw six potential husbands, three lovers… And as many as 15 cheating wives: Lane, Sedgwick, Josie Davis, Kristin Davis, Portia de Rossi, Jodie Foster, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jennifer Lopez, Alyssa Milano, Meg Ryan, Brooke Shields, Tori Spelling, Hilary Swank, Kate Winslet.
  8. Jennifer Garner, Daredevil, 2002.    “How did I become Action Girl?” asked Garner.  Because 22 other girls were not punching their weight in TV’s Alias every week. They were Jessica Alba, Jolene Blalock, Neve Campbell, Penelope Cruz, Portia de Rossi, Eliza Dushku, Claire Forlani, Angie Harmon, Salma Hayek, Katie Holmes, Milla Jovovich, Nicole Kidman, Lucy Liu, Mia Maestro, Rhona Mitra, Bridget Moynahan, Natalie Portman, Kyra Sedgwick, Charlize Theron, Reese Witherspoon.  Plus the Norwegian ballet dancer Natassia Malthe, who became Typhoid in Garner’s 2004 Elektra spin-off. Garner reportedly in one scene – he still married her three years later!
  9. Vera Famiga, The Departed, 2006.     Also considered for the role of Madolyn: Patricia Arquette, Ashley Judd, Gwyneth Paltrow.
