Anthony Bate (1927-2012)


  1. Dennis Lill, Doctor Who #94: Image of the Fendahl , TV, 1977.      Bate won archeologist Dr Fendelman (researching a 12million-year-old skull) Then, hequit and after musing over Colin Blakely, John Carson, John Franklin-Robbins, Michael Gough and Robert Hardy, the (scandalous) producer John Nathan-Taylor’s settled on Lill opposite Doc4 Tom Baker.   Despite 136 UK screen roles since 1967, Bate never Whoved. He was the Cary Grant of UK character actors, always supremely cultivated, groomed, booted and suited… as, for example, his  definitive Oliver Lacon, opposite Alec Guinness' George Smiley, in John Le Carré’sTV twin-set: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, 1979, and Smiley’s People, 1982.
