Pauline Collins

  1. Deborah Watling, Doctor Who #35: The Faceless Ones, TV, 1967.       After her performance as Sam(antha) Briggs, Collins was invited o continue as Doc2 Patrick Troughton’s new travelling rug. She passed. Enter: Jack Watling’s daughter as Victoria Waterfield for the next 40 episodes. Plus one… She reprised Victoria in the 30th anniversary short, Doctor Who #: Dimensions in Time, 1993, along with several other rugs and Docs 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7.    (I caught her  live  - with Francesca Annis, Jane Birkin, Nicky Henson, etc -  in the Passion Flower Hotel stage musical in 1965)._
  2. Polly James, Doctor Who #131: The Awakening, TV, 1984.         Imagine Glenda Jackson and Helen Mirren up for the same Whoverse role. Plus Bond ladies, Honor Blackman, Judi Dench, Diana Rigg and Pamela Salem. Well, producer John Nathan-Taylor had a female casting/dart) board, as well as one for the guys.   As proved by his 18 choices for Jane Humpden in Doc5 Peter Davison’s four-parter. The others were James, Lynda Bellingham, Eleanor Bron, Pauline Collins, Diane Keen, Jean Marsh, Sheila Ruskin, Barbara Shelley, Sylvia Syms, Wanda Ventham (the mother of Benedict Cumberbatch), Fiona Walker, Penelope Wilton. If Collins was hoping for a better Who offer one day, she got it- 39 years after her Whoverse debut! - as Queen Victoria opposite Doc10 David Tennant in #169: Tooth and Claw, 2006. Well, by ghen, she had earned a 1980 Oscar nomination for Shirley Valentine…
