1. – Montgomery Clift, Red River, 1946. Once upon a Hawksian thought, the classic Western was to star Gary Cooper, Cary Grant and Casey Tibbs. Directing a real cowboy and (six times) world rodeo champ would be a challenge, thought director Howard Hawks. champ Well, it worked for for John Ford with Ben Johnson. Then, Tibbs broke an arm. From 1952 onwards he made various Westerns (A Thunder of Drums, The Rounders), but none for The Grey Fox.
