David Alan Grier

  1. Jason Alexander, Seinfeld, TV, 1989-1998.
  2. Robert Townsend, Ratboy, 1986.   Clint Eastwood said he wasn’t going to produce his lover Sondra Locke’s directingt debut  – he just interfered. Every. Which Way.  He refused locations and  re-writes for  the four-year-old scenario – and banned certain actors.  He decided that  Grier (future comedy  star of TV’s In Living Colour) just wasn’t funny-looking enough!
  3. Mykelti  Williamson, Forrest Gump, 1994.   Stand-up Dave Chappelle  held his nose – he thought  it would be a stinker.  Then again, Ice Cube, Martin Lawrence, Eddie Murphy (way too gigantic for such a support role),  Chris Rock and Tupac Shakur also passed on Gump’s pal, Bubba. David Alan Grier, a Tony nominee for The First, preferred  (wait for it!)  I Shaved My Legs For This, 2001, and How To Get The Man’s Foot Outa Your Ass,  2003.  Hanks heard how Chappelle regretted refusing and asked him to be his  buddy in You’ve Got Mail, 1998.  And that’s all I have to say about that…
  4. Daryl Mitchell, Galaxy Quest, 1999.  Probably the finest Hollywood send-up of a TV show had the cast of a copy-Star Trek being mistaken  for  real spacemen  by Thermian aliens wanting their help!. And these were the only two actors in the mix for Lieutenant Laredo.  (The very name sounds like a series).
