Peter Mayhew (1944-2019)

  1. David Prowse, Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, 1976.
  2. Bolaji Badejo and Eddie Powell, Alien, 1978.      The 2.2m tall Londoner was busy enough as Chewbacca in the Star Wars franchise (he was still Chewie in 2015) and passed the (barely seen) Xenomorph creature to the 2.08m Nigerian graphic artist - and Powell, often Christopher Lee’s stunt double. Badejo died at 39 in 1992 from sickle cell anemia. Elder brother of fellow stuntichian Joe Powell, Eddie also worked on various Batman, Bond and Indiana Jones films.   Badejo was never heard of again.  Mayhew was a London hospital attendant when first discovered by US producer Charles H Schneer for Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger, 1975.

"Peter Mayhew was a kind and gentle man, possessed of great dignity and noble character. These aspects of his own personality, plus his wit and grace, he brought to Chewbacca. We were partners in film and friends in life for over 30 years and I loved him. He invested his soul in the character and brought great pleasure to the Star Wars audience. Chewbacca was an important part of the success of the films we made together. He knew how important the fans of the franchise were to its continued success and he was devoted to them. I and millions of others will never forget Peter and what he gave us all.  My thoughts are with his dear wife Angie and his children. Rest easy, my dear friend…. " – Harrison Ford. In a  statement to The Hollywoood Reporter, May 2, 2019.
