Sir Salman Rushdie |

- Willem Dafoe, Lulu On The Bridge, 1998. For his first (solo) outing as a director, American novelist Paul Auster pulled off a (hopeless) coup. He wrote Dr Van Horn for his friend, Rushdie. However, his participation proved impossible with the union and security hassles - the writer still being under Iranian death-threats due to his "blasphemous" book, Satanic Verses. "We'd even rehearsed." said Auster. "He's a great actor, a great performer."
