1. - Bruce Dern, Drive, He Said, 1970. Making his directing debut, Jack Nicholson gave  pal Dernsie the choice of two roles. He voted for the college basketball coach (a brilliant performance) and not  Karen Black's professor husband. Towne, given the other role, became the scenarist of Jack's Last Detail and  Chinatown.
