Bipasha Basu

  1. Yana Gupta, Dum, India, 2003.   Yana’s appearance in the Bijli Girl song turned herinto a Bollywood star. More East European than (as many think) East Indian, she is a Czech citizen and, therefore, the first Western Caucasian woman to successfully enter Indian movies.
  2. Sushmita Sen,Chingaari, India, 2006.     Director Kalpana Lazmi first offered Bipasha (and then Raveen Tandon and Preity Zinta) the lead in what wasoriginally called, A Prostitute And A Postman.

  3. Amara Karan, The Darjeeling Limited, 2006.      Refusing to be   “stereotyped as a typical Indian,” the Bollywood star rejected  Hollywood’s offer to join  director Wes Anderson’s usual troupe (Adrian Brody, Jason Shwartzman Owen Wilson) in delightful whimsy about three brothers bonding on  on a train voyage across India.  And so Rita became a perfect  movie debut for Katna, the Wimbledon-born daughter and Oxford graduate of Sri Lankan parents. In 2012, Katan made Jadoo - this time  about  just two brothers.
  4. Margo Martindale, August: Osage Country, 2012.   Ill-health leading to a double mastechomy at age 64 meant Kathy (“My family call me Kat because I always land on my feet”) had to pass on joining Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Juliette Lewis.
