Bryce Dallas Howard

  1. Cameron Diaz, Gangs of New York, 2000.  For Martin Scorsese, casting was easy. In 1978, Dan Aykroyd-John Belushi were Amsterdam and The Butcher. (What?!!)  Or, Mel Gibson-Willem Dafoe. By 1984, Malcolm McDowell-Robert De Niro. Finally, Leonardo DiCaprio-Daniel Day Lewis. Much harder to locate the real prim pickpocket Jenny Everdeane. For the brothers blue, she would have been Jane Fonda. When Buffy The Vampire Slayer got into Sarah MIchelle Gellar’s way, Marty checked Christina Applegate (from his 1990 Cape Fear auditions), Kate Beckinsale, Kirsten Dunst, Eliza Dushku, Heather Graham, Bryce Dallas Howard, Alyssa Milano, Natalie Portman, Christina Ricci, Winona Ryder, Mena Suvari… and chose Sarah Polley. Except the suits insisted on a “bankable star.” As if Scorsaese-DiCaprio-Day Lewis weren’t enough. Diaz’s six week contracted lasted six months - and did her no good at all!

  2. Erika Christensen, The Sisters, 2004.   BDH and Kelli Garner were discussed for Irene, the middle sister - between Elizabeth Banks and Maria Bello  - in the US college town update of Chekov.
  3. Natalie Portman, V for Vendetta, 2005.    Portman was delighted to win Hammond from BDH, Scarlett Johansson and Keira Knightley because she’d always wanted to shave her head! The role was Evey.Pronounced EV -E is the fifth letter of the alphabet, V is five in Latin and Y is the 25th letter (5 squared). Cinema is so educational!
  4. Rosario Dawson, Clerks II, 2006.     New Jersey auteur - and king - Kevin Smith saw all his fantasies for Becky. Howard , however was (secretly) attached to Lady in the Water. Rosario was such a long shot that Silent Bob’s wife, Jennifer Schwalbach Smith,  was making ready to take over. But Rosario signed up... mainly to see the filming of the donkey show. “Didja see the size of that cock?”
  5. Rachelle Lefevre, Twilight, 2008.      No thanks - the role of Victoriais too small. But yes please when Lefevre was sacked from the next chapter, Eclipse, 2009.
  6. Evangeline Lilly, Ant-Man, 2014.     The micro-superhero had been rolling around Hollywood ever since NewWorld’s 1988 plan was tossed because Disney was into Honey, I Shrunk The Kids. Well, now Disney was Marvel and had Howard, Lilly, Jesscia Chastain and Rashida Jones up for Hope van Dyne, daughter of the first Ant-Man (Michael Douglas, no less). Having been picked by the first director Edgar Wright, Lilly considered quitting when he was fired (for being Edgar Wright!). “I thought: Well, if it’s because Marvel are big bullies, and they just want a puppet and not someone with a vision, I’m not interested in being in this movie. Which is what I was afraid of.” Until meeting his successor Peyton Reed and examining the new scenario.
  7. Genesis Rodriguez, Big Hero 6, 2014.  “We didn't set out to be superheroes. But sometimes life doesn't go the way you planned.“ Karen Gillan, Bryce Dallas Howard, Anna Kendrick and Amanda Seyfried were in the mix for voicing chemistry geek Honey Lemon  in Disney’s first Marvel subject, winning the best animation Oscar. It unfurls in 2023 (we all know that computer battery number, right?) in San Fransokyo (‘Frisco rebuilt by the Japanese after an earthquake) and deals with a super troupe with the titular collective name… that nobody ever uses. Genesis is no known kin to Gina Rodriguez who was up for Go Go Tamago.
  8. Jessica Chastain, It Chapter Two, 2018.    Awkwafina, Karen Gillan, Bryce Dallas Howard, Anna Kendrick, Gena Rodriguez, Amanda Seyfried, Jenny Slate were uo for the adult version of the abused Bev Marsh… inthe 262nd of Stephen King’s staggering 313 screen credits … and his second biggest hit! The first?  It, 2016, of course. (King Kameo: Pawnbroker).
