Third choice Elissa Landi was made Mercia when Colbert agreed to be "the wickedest woman in the world" - both women were among Katharine Hepburn's lovers.

2. - Katina Paxinou, For Whom The Bell Tolls, 1943. Also up for it: Ethel  Barrymore, Nazimova, Swanson, even Pola Negri.
