Edward Woods (1903-1989)

  1. James Cagney, The Public Enemy, 1931.      "We did two or three days' work," recalled director William (Wild Bill) Wellman.  "When I finally looked at the rushes, I said: Good God, we've got the wrong guy in the wrong part."  Even Darryl Zanuck, then Warners production chief, agreed to the switch  -  although he was hoping to make  Woods a star as he was due to marry the daughter of powerful columnist  Louella Parsons.  Instead, Cagney became the great star in his fifth film and Woods' screen  career - including a Buster Crabbe Tarzan movie - was over  by 1938.
