Edward Hardwicke (1932-2011)

  1. Clive Merrison, Doctor Who #145: Paradise Towers, TV, 1987.      Suddenly, Hardwicke was out and Merrison  was in the 22nd Century as The Deputy Chief Caretaker… when it was an outlandish Richard Briers who should have been dropped as the top caretaker. He was so bad, he made Doc7 Sylvester McCoy look good. The son of the noted  Hollywood star, Sir Cedric Hardwicke, was another Doctor- Watson - opposite Jeremy Brett’s Sherlock Holmes, for a full tele-decade.  Ironically, Merrison  (also seen as Callum in #37:The Tomb of the Cyberman, with Doc2 Patrick Troughton) played Sherlock for two decades on BBC Radio, the only actor to play the entire Holmes saga.
  2. Dinsdale Landen, Doctor Who #154: The Curse of Fenric, TV, 1989.      Hardwicke, Martin Jarvis and David McCallum were also discussed for Dr Judson - based on the WWII code-breaker, Alan Turing (played by Benedict Cumberbatch in The Imitation Game, 2014). Ian Briggs scripted Judson as gay as Turing, but Aunty over-ruled discussing sexuality in a family hour show.
