Edward Woodward (1930-2009)

  1. George Baker, Doctor Who #111: Full Circle, TV, 1980.    The baker’s dozen actors up for Login were familiar names from 80s Whoverse casting register. Woodward, Baker, Joss Ackland, Brian Blessed, John Carson, James Ellis, Frank Finlay, Bernard Hepton, Donald Houston, Jeremy Kemp, William Lucas, Alfred Lynch, TP McKenna. And they stayed listed until they became available.   Woodward never did - during 106 ther screen roles, (the greatest being Callan, TV, 1967-1972)
  2. Frank Windsor, Doctor Who #128 : The King’s Demons, 1983.      The usual suspects of he infamous producer John Nathan-Taylor were flagpoled for Sir Ranulf Fitzwilliam at the court of King John, circa 1215… Woodward, Joss Ackland, George Baker, Ian Bannen, Julian Glover, Michael Jayston, Peter Jeffrey, Dinsdale Landen, Alfred Lynch, TP McKenna, Clifford Rose, Peter Vaughan. Plus three Z Cars cops: booming Brian Blessed, Irish James Ellis… and the quiet Windsor.
  3. Patrick Stewart, Lifeforce, 1984.
  4. Terry Molloy, Doctor Who  #137: Attack of the Cybermen, 1984.      They’re back! (Yet again). The (unpopular) Doc6 Colin Baker sets out to stop the Cybermen destroying Earth. (Yet again). Woodward was in the mix - Ralph Bates, Brian Blessed, Brian Glover (he became Griffiths) and Bernard Hill - for the cop called Russell… ultimately given to Terry Molloy (the name of Brando’s character in On The Waterfront). Surrey born (like all the best people), Woodward became famous as Callan, the Bond ordinaire, and the series where many future Whoverse actors made good. On meeting him, Noel Coward is supposed to have said: “Edward Woodward... Edward Woodward... Sounds like a fart in the bath
