Una O'Connor (1890-1959)

  1. Beryl Mercer, Three Live Ghosts, 1936.   Shooting began on November 6. It halted stopped two days later. The script was respun in ten more days, reset at end of WWI, and when shooting restarted on November 18, the entire cast was new.   Mercer was also Mrs Gubbins in the 1928 version..
  2. Sara Allgood, This Above All, 1941.   Ya can’t alwys get wot ya wanna…  Darryl F Zanuck had such tight control at Fox that Nigel Bruce was the only one of eight casting suggestions made by director Anatole Litvak that DFZ approved. And he chose Allgood - one year after her brilliance in How Green Was My Valley- for one solitary scene as… a waitress. Title stemmed from the Polonious soliloquy in Hamlet: “This above all: to thine own self be true...”As John Wayne could have told you; he could recite the entire play. With rather more pauses than Shakespeare intended!
  3. Lillian Randolph, It’s a Wonderful Life, 1946
