Blanche Yurka, A Tale of Two Cities, 1934.      For the infamous Madame Defarge in the fourth screen version of the Charles Dickens classic, producer David O Selznick also tested Judith Anderson, Emily Fitzroy and May Robson.  LaVerne (who had played Juliet and Lady Macbeth at age 14!) was compensated with The Vengeance and the Defarge role inspired  her 1936 voicing of The Wicked Queen in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
