- Clark Gable, Mutiny on the Bounty, 1934. The Scottish actor-turned-director Frank Lloyd bought the rights for $12,000 and promised a great epic from the first two novels of Bernard Nordhoff and James Norman Hall’s trilogy about the 18th Century mutiny, if he (a) directed and (b) played the hero, Fletcher Christian. MGM’s production genius Irving Thalberg said Yes to (a) and No to (b). Lloyd’s bushy eyebrows were in the film, Charles Laughton copied them for his Captain Bligh!
