Casey Affleck

  1. Giovanni Ribisi, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, 2004.    Originally set for Dex, who had one scene with producer Jude Law and archive footage of Lord Laurence Olivier. Casey vanished and Ribisi arrived to become Dex after shooting started.
  2. Eric Dane, Burlesque, 2009.     Considered by New York writer-director Steve Antin for Marcus in – surprise! surprise! – Cher’s first musical. So were Patrick Dempsey, Jamie Foxx, Sam Worthington.
  3. Garrett Hedlund, TRON: Legacy, 2009.     From the line-up of his potential sons – Affeck, Ryan Gosling, Chris Pine, Michael Stahl-David – Jeff Bridge expected Casey to be junior. Casey’s comment : “Yeah, I asked them to recast my father, and they wouldn’t do it.”
  4. Adam Driver, What if, 2010.   Can guys ‘n’ girls be just… friends? For Daniel Radcliffe’s first non-Harry Potter movie, things changed between the drawing board and the set. Such as cousins Affleck and Mary Elizabeth Winstead turning into cousins Driver and Zoe Kazan.
  5. Scoot McNairy, Killing Them Softly, 2011.   Casey joined the mix when producer and co-star Brad Pitt planned on reuniting the Pitt-Affleck-Sam Rockwell trio from the same director Andrew Dominik’s The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford.
  6. Daniel Radcliffe, The F Word, 2012.      Harry Potter goes rom-com. With Zoe Kazan. The script was on a shelf since 2007 when Affleck was due to be learning that F is also for friendship… That’s all he can get from the girl he longs for who is already with a guy.
  7. Oscar Issac, Inside Llewyn Davis, 2012.  The Coen brothers saw Casey Affleck, Michael Fassbender and Ryan Reynolds for the titular Davis on the Greenwich Village music scene  Plus  the muchb closer  more acceptable Scott Avett (of North Carolina’s Avett Brothers band) and US  singer-songwriter Conor Oberst. “The film doesn’t really have a plot,” admitted Joel Cohen.  “That’s why we threw the cat in.” The Cohens said they preferred their True Grit vulture to the cats they used.…
  8. Colin Farrelll, Dumbo, 2017.    If elephants could fly…  Well, they do at Disney. Three times, the 1941 toon, the 19851986 toon series and now the live-action version, Affleck, Bill Hader, Chris Pine, Will Smith passed the code-named Big Ears  (wow, wonder what that’s about!)  to an exceedingly interested Farrell. Because he was a Tim Burton fan, loved working with (the circus) horses and longed to make ““something as sweet and fantastical and otherworldly, while being grounded in some recognisable world.” Story-wise, this was more Free Willy revisited.
  9. Charlie Hunnam, Triple Frontier, 2019.  The duo fixing up a dirty half-dozen of fellow needy ex-Special Forces guys to rip off your usual South American drug kingpin to beef up their pensions went from Tom Hanks-Johnny Depp-Tom Hanks  in 2010 to Tom Hardy-Channing Tatum or Ben-and-Casey Affleck in 2017 to Denzel Washington-Sean Penn to Leonardo DiCaprio-Anybody to, finally, Ben Affleck-Oscar Isaac. Will Smith and Mark Wahlberg also featured in the mixes – minus any cited pardner.By which time it had run out of the steam it must have once had as Kathryn Bigelow was once going to direct. JC Chandor was no substitute.
