Catherine Allegret

  1. Nanette Newman, The Madwoman of Chaillot, 1969.   Director John Huston had selected Simone Signoret’s daughter for his version. Bryan Forbes preferred his wife for his.  Bad move.
  2. Fanny Cottençon, LEtoile du Nord, France, 1981.  Everyone was walking on eggs… realisateur  Pierre Granier-Deferre, co-star Philippe Noiret and Euro casting icon Dominque Besnehard. All trying  to stop the great Simone Signoret from insisting that her own daughter should play her screen daughter. “She shouldn’t be disqualified because she’s my daughter.”  No, but Allegret  was too old. Her test was good, but Fanny’s was better. “I’ll make another film with her,” Deferre promised Simone,  “but not this one.” (He didn’t). He hired  Fanny again in L ’Ami de Vincent, also starring Noiret. Well, she had  won a support actress César award for Nord. Bitter at first, Simone came around, agreed that Fanny was not the rotten actress she had first called. her and became very friendly with Besnehard, phoning all the time. “So-and-so hasn’t worked for a while…  if you have something for him.” Stuck in an invidious position, Cottençon reported that Simone was “lovely with me – quelle classe!”  This was, alas, her 69th and final  film. She died, at 64, in 1985,
