- Frank Merrill, Tarzan The Mighty, 1928. While being hyped as the greatest of all Tarzans, serial king Bonomo was severely injured in a Perils of the Wild stunt. He passed the loin-cloth to Merrill – a stunt double for the first ape man, Elmo Lincoln. It was the champion gymnast Merrill who dreamt up Tarzan’s vine-swinging. His poor speaking voice swung him out of talkies.
