1. – R Lee Emery, Full Metal Jacket, 1987. Stanley Kubrick really teeed off the ex-golf pro by changing his mind about Colerci replacing the “too creepy” Bill McKinney as the badass DI, Sgt Hartman. (John Boorman said Kubrick was scared of McKinney, the Deliverance rapist). The role went to a real DI, the film’s technical adviser. “I wanted that role so much, I stole it” – blowing Kubrick away with his videotape demo, yelling obscene insults and abuse for 15 minutes without stopping, repeating himself, blinking or flinching despite being continuously pelted with tennis balls and oranges – plus such improvs as not even having “the goddamn common courtesy to give him a reach-around.” Colerci thundered on about real killers should hired to play the soldiers. Kubrick gave him a chopper door-gunner, with a memorable line of his own. “Ain’t war hell?” Emery had advised-acted in a few other Nam films (including Apocalypse Now) but this movie bred a new career for him – 99 screen roles in 20 years.
