As usual, bilious realisateur Jean-Luc Godard knew nothing about acting – and didn’t look any further than his leading lady Mireille Darc’s recent co-star, for his study of (according to Chicago critic Roger Ebert) “violence, hatred, the end of ideology and the approaching cataclysm that will destroy civilisation.”

2. – Jean-Pierre Mocky,  A mort l’arbitre! France, 1984. When the original choice “defected,”  the director took over the role. He often acted in his films to keep the budget low.
