Kim Delaney

  1.  Robin Wright (Penn), The Princess Bride, 1986.    Apart from the future NYPD Blue star, director Rob Reiner thumbed through a veritable little black book of Hollywood’s newyoung hotties! Suzy Amis, Valerie Bertinelli, Yasmine Bleeth, Phoebe Cates, Courteney Cox, Rebecca de Mornay, Cathryn de Prume, Sherilyn Fenn, Jennifer Grey, Anne Heche, Marg Helgenberger, Lauren Holly, Patsy Kensit, Juliette Lewis, Carey Lowell, Kelly Lynch, Virginia Madsen, Mary Stuart Masterson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Alexandra Paul, Amanda Pays, Meg Ryan, Mia Sara, Greta Scacchi, Annabella Sciorra, Kyra Sedgwick, Tori Spelling, Catherine Mary Stewart, Brenda Strong, Courtney Thorne-Smith, Uma Thurman, Meg Tilly, Charlene Tilton, Nancy Travis, Amy Yasbeck, Sean Young.
  2. Lea Thompson, Some Kind of Wonderful, 1986.    Director John Hughes hated his 1985 Pretty in Pink ending (as much as Molly Ringwald hated the dress). He respun it for yet another teen triangle. However, Ringwald cut loose. The star discovery of his first three hits wanted out of schooldaze. “I can’t be 16 forever.” Hughes was furious and never worked with her again… Martha Coolidge was first asked to helm and chose Delaney for Amanda Jones. Later, Eric Stoltz recommended Thompson – and she fell for their director Howard Deutch, wed him, and had two daughters. Molly sent up the Hughes canon in Not Another Teen Movie, 2001.
  3. Debrah Farentino, Sherlock Holmes Returns, TV, 1993.     In the dance for Amy Winslow, however Farentino had a CBS deal and Kim didn’t. Didn’t help. The pilot (with a modern day Sherlock in San Francisco’s Baker Street!) never graduated to a series. Although, Anthony Higgins was a perfect Holmes but minus a Watson, tut, tut!  Debrah was no substitute.
  4. Emily ProcterCSI: Miami, TV, 2002-2012.    The CBS suits  wanted to reprise the steam-heat partnership of William Petersen and Marg Helgenberger on the mothership, CSI. “We needed a strong female,” declared exec producer Anthony Zuiker.  Sela Ward passed.  Poor Kim Delaney quit after ten chapters, hardly the first actor to not gell with the headlining David Caruso, who had a bad rep from his NYPD Bluedays. She was replaced, in turn, by Procter –  surviving all of the 232 Caruso episodes.
