- Martin Starr, The Incredible Hulk, 2007. The new green guy was Edward Norton. And for a kind of lucky charm, he wanted one of the fellas from his producer wife Shauna Robertson’s Knocked Up comedy to fill the cameo spot of Computer Nerd. Hill, Seth Rogen and Jason Segal passed. Starr starred. Kinda.
- Ramon Rodriguez, Transformers : Revenge of the Fallen, 2008. Co-scenarist Roberto Orci revealed that Hill was sent a script and asked to play Leo Spitz. Talks broke down. By 2014, Hill was (surprise! surprise!) nominated for a support Oscar for Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street.
- Zach Galifianakis, The Hangover, 2008. “We can’t find Doug!” No one knew that losing the bridegroom after his stag night would smash comedy records. And go on to a three movie franchise. So… #1. Knowall Jack Black passed. #2. Hill, Thomas Haden Church, Jake Gyllenhaal were looked over with apparent askance. #3. Alan was then retooled to suit the exuberant Zach The Greek.
- James Franco, Why Him?, US-Cambodia, 2016. Hill was the obvious first choice as the script was based on his real fears on meeting his real; girlfriend’s real father… who happened to be the real Dustin Hoffman! In this third film with Bryan Cranston, Franco was Hill – but as a tattoo-covered Silicon Valley zillionaire. Teri Polo was…. No! I mean, Zoey Deutch was the girlfriend. But this was never as funny as Meet The Parents (the two sequels featured the real Hoffman as Ben Stiller’s Pop).
- Adam Sandler, Uncut Gems, 2019. People actually started talking Oscar for Sandler for the worst ever Al Pacino impression in Benny and Josh Safdie’s drama… with echoes of Anthony Newley scouring around for money in his star-making Sammy, TV, 1958, and the movie version, The World of Sammy Lee, 1962. (Mickey Rooney did the US TVersion, Eddie, 1958) The brothers wanted a Jewish actor and first tried Sandler, who passed (too quickly), “pursued” Harvey Keitel, “considered” Sacha Baron Cohen and went “younger” with Jonah Hill. So now we know who to blame…
