Burl Ives

  1. Walter Brennan, Rio Bravo, 1958.
  2. Joseph N Welch, Anatomy of a Murder, 1958.     Spencer Tracy rejected it – too small a role – so the burly Burl  felt obliged to follow suit. Welch, a real judge, almost stole the movie. From a book by another judge, Robert Traver aka Michigan Supreme Court Justice John D. Voelker.  In the 1954 Army-McCarthy Senate hearings, Welch became a star because of his famous rebuke of Senator Joseph McCarthy: “Have you no sense of decency, sir?”
  3. Thomas Mitchell, Pocketful Of Miracles, 1960.   Directing legend Frank Capra never knew this re-make of his 1933 Lady for a Day  would be his final  film. Or he would have tried harder…  and found a better business partner than his star, Glenn Ford…  Burl Ives,Charles Laughton, Fredric March and Edward G. Robinson were in the frame for Judge Henry Blake which went to Jack Oakie… who had to  quit due to “a lingering intestinal virus.”  And so, Hizzoner became Thomas Mitchell, a Capra regular.
  4. Adolfo Celi, Thunderball, 1965.
  5. Anthony Quinn, Zorba The Greek, 1965.
  6. James Gregory, Beneath The Planet of the Apes, 1970.    The mask, more than the suit had already putOrson Welles off playing gorilla General Ursus.“You can’t act witha mask,” he thundered.
