Darren McGavin

  1. Jack Lemmon, It Should Happen To You, 1954.      Once cast off-Broadway as a Tolstoian father and son, the  old  pals  from New York’s Old Knickerbocker Music Hall met up at the tests for Judy Holliday’s film.  “I asked Jack if he thought he would get the job.  He didn’t think he had much of a chance.  Well, I went in there and tested and  they threw my ass right out.  Next  thing I heard was that Lemmon had the part.”
  2. Larry Hagman, I Dream of Jeannie, TV, 1965-1970.   Early on in  the run as Barbara Eden’s co-star, Hagman (the future JR in Dallas) proved diffcult to work with.  (Hollywoodese for alcohol and/or drug abuse). Producer Sidney Sheldon  also got serious about canning him. McGavin was to replace him in a special script explaining how Hagman lost his Jeannie in a bottle (geddit?) and McGavin found her.
