A cherished member of the Marcel Pagnol Clan, Maupi was the ferry-boatman in the Marseilles trilogy. “The baker is not for me,” he said, “give it to Jules.” “Too small for him,” said the playwright and film-maker Pagnol, fearing exactly that response from Raimu, himself, jealous of the director’s new cinematic affair with mossieur Fernandel. Maupi took a smaller role. (Producer Alexander Korda wanted to re-make the tale with Chaplin as the baker).
