- James Whitmore, Battleground, 1949. One Jim for another, when director William (Wild Bill) Wellman wanted an actor who was a credible, tough drill sergeant and not as a dancer (40s’ Hollywoodese for gay). So why select a Broadway dancer (from Brigadoon and Oklahoma) in the first place! Whitmore was the real deal – having served in the Marine Corps.
- Hugh Laing, Brigadoon, 1954. This once, Hollywood wanted one of the Broadway stars. He did not want Hollywood – preferring to tour with the Agnes de Mille Dance Theatre. He went to LA to star in the classic Oklahoma! dream sequence, 1955, and later starred in the daily soap, All My Children, for nearly 30 years.
