Gertrude Olmstead

May McAvoy, Ben-Hur, 1924.    Esther changed following production delays in Italy.  Olmstead  made 62 films and retired at 25, after marrying  the director (of 162 films) Robert Z Leonard.   McAvoy was in Hollywood’s first talkie, The Jazz Singer, 1927 – although she didn’t say a word.  She managed that, however, in the first British talkie, The Terror, in 1928.  Her 95th film was a well publicised bit  – Woman in Crowd – in the 1958  Ben-Hur re-tread.  . (Sophia Loren and her Mama were also among the extras).
