1. – Arletty, Et ta souer, France, 1958. One of the many ex-wives of Sacha Guitry, Printemps (Springtime in French) was an enormous French star before and after WWII. Her new husband, Pierre Fresnay, wished to make a film with her. At 60, she decided on a test and despite the not inconsiderable talents of cinematographer Christian Matras, she hated the result, declaring: “Elle – elle est fini! Her – she’s finished!” And she never acted again. Arletty jumped at the job because of her tax hassles and attached herself to the amusing young actor Jean-Claude Brialy because Fresnay “was too busy telephoning his wife every 15 minutes.” Brialy directed “Arlette” in Les Volets close, 1972, and remained a close friend of the “droll, intelligent, brilliant” and gradually blind legend until her 1991 death.
