1. – Darry Cowl, Archimede le clochard, France, 1958. For their sixth film together, Jean Gabin suggested a tale about tramps to realisateur Gilles Grangier. “For an amusing marriage:” Grangier wanted Richard as the second clochard (bum, tramp). His producers preferred the fast-rising (but still cheap) Cowl. Richard went on to make one of Gabin’s roles his very own in the first (and seemingly endless) French TV series – 88 episodes, 1967-90 – about Georges Simenon’s flic, Inspector Jules Maigret.
