- Corinne Luchaire, Le dernier tournant, France, 1939. Two of the greatest realisateurs – Jean Renoir and Marcel Carné – tried to direct the first screen version of James M Cain’s salty Postman Never Rings Twice. They both wanted Gabin and Michel Simon. Only Simon survived for Pierre Chenal’s version.
- Micheline Presle, Boule de suif (US: Angel and Sinner), 1945. Two for the price of one… Romance passed and Presle agreed to the sprightly Guy de Maupassant tale – and his Mademoiselle Fifi were joined at the hip to Èlisabeth Roussete, with the titular nickname. Another mighty success for Presle who, with her friends, Danielle Darrieux and Michèle Morgan, became the top French stars of the 40s and never really stopped. Micheline’s last film was made in 2014, Danielle’s in 2016 ,Michèle”s in 1991… and Viviane’s in 1974.
- Martine Carol, Le desir et l’amour, France-Spain, 1950. Rather like a dry run for Truffautl’s much later – and much better – La nuit americaine, with Martine (succeeding the older Romance) as A Star making a movie in Torremolinos. Her leading man was Antonio Vilar – future partner of her successor as #1 French star, Brigitte Bardot, in La femme et le pantin (UK: A Woman Like Satan; US: The Female) in 1958
