- Adam West, Batman, TV, 1966-1968. What a chequered career… The ex- encyclopedia salesman lost Bruce Wayne (and Clark Kent!) but won the teflonesque Major Steve Trevor (Wonder Woman’s boss, 1976-1979), became Playgirl magazine’s first male nude centrefold and ran Star Waggons, largest supplier of trailers for the stars. His Bat-test (with Peter RJ Deyell as Robin) was seen (with the winning tests of West and Burt Ward) in the same Fox studio’s Hollywood Screen Tests: Take 1,1999, and the batty Return to the Batcave: The Misadventures of Adam and Burt, 2003. Telly cowpoke Ty Hardin also auditioned. West won because he understood “you can’t play Batman in a serious, square-jawed, straight-ahead way without giving the audience the sense that there’s something behind that mask waiting to get out, that he’s a little crazed, he’s strange.” In my London ‘60s, I wrote a script for BatWest in 1967 – teaching UKids road safety rules (“Look right, look
