David Walliams

  1. Dylan Moran, Shaun of the Dead, 2004.      The Little Britain TV star auditioned but settled for simply joining the fun as a voice in some of the news reports about the living dead taking over 21st Century Britain… something beyond even George Romero’s imagination. Top star Simon Pegg (aka Shaun) recommended the Black Books TV comic.
  2. Johnny Depp, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, 2004.
Director Tim Burton’s 30 fancies for chocolatier Willy Wonka were his ole Betelgeuse, Michael Keaton. Plus McKellen, Rowan Atkinson, Dan Aykroyd, Nicolas Cage, Jim Carrey, Chevy Chaze, Warwick Davis, Robert De Niro, James Gandolfini, Dwayne Johnson, Marilyn Manson, Steve Martin, Rik Mayall, Bill Murray, Mike Myers, John Neville, Leslie Nielsen, Brad Pitt, Peter Sallis, Adam Sandler, Jerry Seinfeld, Will Smith, Patrick Stewart, Ben Stiller, Christopher Walken, Robin Williams. And the surviving Monty Python crew (also up for the 1970 version): John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin. Among the five exec producers, author Roald Dahl’s widow, Liccy, wanted her husband’s favourite Willy – Dustin Hoffman  If not possible she voted for UK comics, Eddie Izzard or David Walliams. She was quite happy with Depp… who found Willy’s voice while riffing on a stoned George W Bush!

  3. David  Tennant, Doctor Who, TV,  2005-2010.

  4. Roger Lloyd Pack, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, 2004.      Too busy swimming to be Bartemius ‘Barty’ Crouch Junior? Not really… The Little Britain TV comic did not start raising charity funds by swimming the English Channel (22 miles in 10 hours and 34 minutes) or the Straits of Gibralter (12 miles in 4 1/2 hours) until 2006 and 2008.

  5. Matt Smith, Doctor Who, TV, 2010-2014.
  6. Johnny Depp, Alice in Wonderland, 2009.     In earlier days, Walliams and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson!) were considered for The Mad Hatter. Once Tim Burton agreed to direct, nolo contendere about who would be asking Alice: “Why is a raven like a writing desk?” (Neither Burton, Depp, nor even Lewis Carroll had the answer). Matt Lucas, Walliams’ partner from the hit BBC series, Little Britain, 2003-06, played Tweedledee and Tweedledum.
