- Bella Darvi, The Egyptian, 1953. The sultry brunette ex-model with the smoky-voice was contracted by Fox in the early 50s. She was an early thought for Nefer, until head Fox Darryl Zanuck fell hook, line and stinker for another French mistress. (Darvi was the main reason Marlon Brando quit the epic. And indeed, her horrendous performance has to be seen to be believed). Zanuck still shoved her into six other Fox films, while axing Leith’s pact soon after her excellent work in Violent Saturday, 1954. By 1961, the poor girl was reduced to a disembodied part of the Z flick cult, The Brain That Wouldn’t Die.
