Refusing to be typed as a hard hero (he blocked all re-runs of his 70s’ UK series, The Professionals, for example, for 20 years), Shaw passed the Hollywood offer to another (somewhat too old) TV hard hero. A good show, just not a patch on Woodward’s glorious Callan spy series series, 1967-72 – more Le Carré than Fleming. Shaw never was typecast, doing it all from Coronation Street to Doctor in the House, plus Banquo, Horatio, Antarctic explorer Captain Scott, Cecil Rhodes of Rhodesia, Henry Baskerville, Adam Dagliesh.
