  1. Charles Waldron, The Big Sleep, 1944. Deciding to go against type, director Howard Hawks dropped the venerated Warner (in movies since 1900, including being “the definitive cinematic Christ” in The King of Kings, 1927) and General Sternwood became Waldron’s 62nd and final role. He died two years later at 71.
