1. – Vladek Sheybal, Kanal, Poland, 1956. Warsaw director Andrzej Wajda wanted his 1954 Poklolenie/A Generation star for the lead. Instead, Korab became the screen debut of Sheybal. By the time Cybulski was the Polish James Dean, due to Wajda’s Popiól i diament/Ashes and Diamonds in 1958, Sheybal had escaped to the West, making friends with Sean Connery and accepting his advice to join From Russia With Love – first of his 79 UK roles in 30 years … while poor Cybulski fell to his death under a train in Wroclaw.
