Marc Singer

  1. Christophe(r) Lambert, Highlander, 1985.    So many tried keeping straight face when saying: “I am Connor MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod. I was born in 1518 in the village of Glenfinnan on the shores of Loch Shiel. And I am immortal…” Once Sean Connery refused the lead (for the splashier role of the 2,000-year-old Ramirez), finding the titular and immortal Connor MacLeod was not easy.  Kurt Russell actually won the role but his lover, Goldie Hawn, insisted he stay home; he dealt with Big Trouble in Little China, instead. So you can imagine the anguish of the six producers when, after also being turned down by Kevin Costner, Michael Douglas, Mel Gibson, Scott Glenn, Ed Harris, Hulk Hogan, William Hurt, David Keith, Mickey Rourke, Sam Shepard, Marc Singer (the too busy top choice), Sting (also asked for a song), Patrick Swayze and Peter Weller… that they discovered that Australian director Russell Mulcahy’s French choice of the new and French Tarzan…
  2. Adrian Paul, Highlander, TV,1992-1998.   Singer didn’t say this, either: “Now is the time of the Gathering, when the stroke of a sword will release the power of the Quickening…”   The Connery-looking Paultested first. Dutchman Derek De Lint won  – and then gave up the new Immortal, Duncan MacLeod… found by Connor in a bog in the aftermath of the battle of Glen Fruin in 1625.Next? In the frame for  the new Duncan (not Connor) MacLeod were Gary Daniels, Geraint Wyn Davies, Anthony De Longis, Alexis Denisof, Alistair Duncan, James Horan. And Singer, who had lost Connor in ‘85.  To paraphrase Oscar Wilde: To lose one Highlander  may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness.
  3. Kris Kristofferson, Blade, 1997.The first choice (to play Whistler) is not always the final choice…
  4. Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Supernatural, TV, 2005-2008.   The Beastmaster  and The Chin, aka Bruce Campdell,  were early choices for John Winchester, for x epsides as father of his sons, hunters of all, manner of things going bump in the night. At 39, JDM was a mere dozen years older than his oldest boy: Jensen Ackles as Dean Winchester.   Campbell and Singer were 47 and 57.
