- Akihiko Hirata, Godzilla, Japan, 1954. Dr Serizawa was set as the first starring rôle for the Chinese-born Takarada. However, director Ishirô Honda felt the Korean-born Hirata (booked for Hideto Ogato) would make a better tragic hero, so he swopped their rôles. Honda’s producer had seen The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms, 1952, but Honda (great friends with Kurosawa), is the real father of the monster named after the Japanese for gorilla (gorira) and whale (kujira) and pronounced Go-dzi-la. Hence, Godzilla – via the Toho international sales suits. Takarada made a further five chapters of the franchise. Plus the Hollywood reboot, released in Gojira’s 60th birthday year of 2014.
