- Joan Sims, Carry On Teacher, 1959. Dora was an early thought, but Joan, The First Lady of Carry On (in 24 of the 30 farces) became – wait for it – Miss Alcock. The UK Censor was not pleased by the way the cast overly pronounced the latter half of the name. He relented, of course. It was a genuine name and famous since 1919 and the first non-stop transatlantic flight made by UK fliers, Alcock and Brown.
