- Robert Hays, Airplane!, 1979. Wuhl, Chevy Chase, David Letterman, Bill Murray, – even singer Barry Manilow – and Fred Willard (“I didn’t understand it!”) were in the clouds for Ted Stryker, the pilot who hated flying in the hilarious take on the Airport disaster movies – and the unintentionally funny Zero Hour!,1957, and its celebrated line: “We have to find someone who can not only fly this plane, but who didn’t have fish for dinner.”
- Paul Reiser, Diner, 1981. Wuhl auditioned for Modell – played in the flm and the 1983 series pilot by the future award-winning star of Mad About You. He had simply accompanied a pal to the audutions when Barry Levinson asked him to test as well, why not? ”Why not!” This was Levinson’s directing debut, delivered on time and $500,000 under budget. “He was the most confident director you could imagine, ” said Daniel Stern, “especially considering none of us had any idea what we were doing.” Stern’s Shrevie and Mickey Rourke’s Boogie were played by Max Cantor and Michael Madson in the TV pilot. Not the same thing at all.
