- Sean Kenney, Star Trek #11/12: The Menagerie Parts 1and 2, TV, 1966. (Stardates 3012.4 and 3013.1). Creator Gene Roddenberry asked Black (writer, story editor and associate producer) to play the legendary Captain Pike – because his blue eyes matched those of Jeffrey Hunter, who was Pike (the forerunner of Captain Kirk) in the 1964Trekpilot, The Cage. Black passed (and soon quit the series). Kenney became the older, disfigured and wheel-chaired Pike, with Hunter in other scenes… as Lucille Ball’s Desilu company wanted to make use of out-takes from the pilot – never fully aired until 1988. Roddenberry wrote all three chapters.
